The quake centred near the town of Ridgecrest struck just hours after a 6.4 magnitude temblor hit the same area on Thursday – the strongest in the desert region in 25 years. Scared residents poured out onto the streets and Ridgecrest Regional Hospital evacuated patients, some in wheelchairs with IVs attached. The quake, which hit 11 miles from the town, caused roads to crack and walls to collapse.

Ridgecrest Police Chief Jed McLaughlin said only minor injuries had been reported so far as emergency services scrambled to deal with the aftermath of the quake which hit at 8.19pm.

California Office of Emergency Services said they had received multiple reports of fires and the Los Angeles Fire Department said lines were down and trains had been temporarily halted.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the small town of Trona, 25 miles east of Ridgecrest, suffered “significant damage” with houses knocked off their foundations.

A highway in the area has been sealed off due to rockslides.

Officers say Trona residents are in need of water and have urged people to make donations.

Giovanna Gomez, who lives in Bakersfield which is 110 miles from Ridgecrest, told CNN: “It was about a minute long. Far longer than the one that happened yesterday.

“It was a smooth roll going back and forth.”

Another local resident said his house shook for almost half a minute.

More than 2,000 households in Ridgecrest are without power and hundreds more people in Seales Valley, 25 miles from the town, are experiencing outages.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) and the European Mediterranean Seismological Agency which monitors quakes recorded it as 7.1 magnitude.

The quake hit 125 miles north of Los Angeles, where localised power outages have been reported.
